The first Animation on television was in 1938 and was called Willie the worm. it was made for the the televison company and sparked off animation on tv. from then on more and more animation was on television and as the years went on Animated tv serries started to develop. the first successful animated television serries was the flintstones which aired in 1960 to 1966. this was considered successful as it drew a audience in mainly children. other animated televison serries around that time was Top cat, the jetsons and The Alvin show.
As animation grew in populaity the quainty increased. this lead to several television channels being created just for cartoons. a example of this is Nickelodeon which was created in december 1979. this lead to more popular cartoons and animation being shown to a wider audience. in the 1990's "adult animation" was created. adult animation means that the animation being shown was strictly for adults and not for children.examples of adult cartoons that was on television are The Simpsons, Family guy, south park and american dad. these animations were usually shown later on at night

top cat was a early animated cartoon serries and was made in 1960.

willie the worm was the first animated cartoon that was shown on televison. it lasted 8 minutes and lead to more animation to be shown on tv.

family guy was created in 1999 and was classed as a adult animation. unlike some other adult animations Family guy was axed for being too offensive, it later returned.

The Jetsons was another early cartoon serries and very popular at the time. it was first aired on 1962.

the simpsons is argubely the most succesful cartoon tv serries ever made. it is classed as a adult animation. it was made in 1987 when it appeared on a televison show as a short sketch. the televison serries was that popular that a film was made which equally did very well at the box office making 527 million dollars.

the spiderman cartoon serries was very successful and spanned several serries and programs. it was first made in 1967.

south park is another adult animation. it was first created in 1997. south park, like the simpons, was so succesful that they made a film which was very succesful at the box office.

tom and jerry was a very succesful cartoon serries which was created in 1940 and is still shown today. it is aimed at a younger audience.

Examples of animation - film

The first animated film with synchronized sound was Steam boat willie (1928), up till this point animation had no sound or had sound added on after. animated films began to developed over time. The first animated film with colour was Disney's snow white and the seven Dwarfs. this was the first animated film which had colour all the way through and was made in 1937. 

As time went on animated films became more and more popular and the audience became interested especially the younger audience. Animation is a big part of modern day cinema, which several big animation companies producing several animated films per year. depending on the company a animation can make millions of pounds. examples of this is Disney's toy story serries which had seaquls due to its success.

Toy story was made in 1995 and made  $192 million. The animation was made by computer generated images and cost 30 million dollars to make. this film had 2 more films made after it which was also very successful.



The nightmare before christmas was made in 1993 and was written by Tim burton. it cost 18 million to make and made 50 million at the box office.

Happy feet was made in 2006 and was a american/austrlian production. again this animation was computer generated and was very successful at the box office making 384 million dollars all together.

Beauty and the beast was made in 1991and was made by Walt Disney. the film earned alot of success including a golden globe. it also made 403 million dollars at the box office.

Fantasic Mr Fox was made in 2009, and unlike some of the animated films, this filmused stop motion animation. it cost 40 million to make and made 46 million. this shows that this type of animation is not as popular as other animation techniques.

sherk was made by again Walt Disney and was very successful. it was so successful that it spawned several other films from it. it made 484 million at the box office alone and cost only 40 million to make.

the iron giant was a cartoon film and was different to the computer generated animated films. it was made by Warner Brothers animation in 1999. it cost 70 million to make and made 103 million at the box office.

Wall- e was made by Walt disney and like previous animations it was computer generated. it cost 180 dollars to make and made 521 million at the box office alone.

Animation has been around since the year 1832, the animation was shown to people by a phenakistoscope. other earlier animations include the zoetrope (1834) and the praxinoscope. as years went on animation progressed and improved a great deal. the first animated film was Humorous phases of funny faces which was made in 1906. As more and more animated films came out the films them selves developed to include sound, colour, characters and story line. The first animation with synchronized sound was the animation Steam Boat Willy. again as animated films progressed they became more popular and attracted more audiences. some notable successful animated films include Snow White and the seven dwarfs (1937), toy story (1995) and Up (2010).
